What personality types should you be looking for when hiring? Obviously, you should have your own checklist of personality traits in mind - for example, hardworking, outgoing, attentive - but have you thought about what type of person you want to bring into your company?
It may be worth looking around your office and assessing what personality types you already have working for you. Not only should you consider what skills you want to add to your workforce, but also what personality type will complement those around them.
In order to create the right collaborative working environment for growing your business, you will need to find the right mix of people. I've identified five complimentary types of worker for creating this.
These are the ideas people who generate starting points that move your company forward. Creatives don't necessarily need to be at the top of your organisation to drive change but wherever they are, you should ensure there are means in place to make sure their voice is heard. This can be a regular open forum across departments or in an idea generating survey emailed out to all employees.
These people perfectly complement the creatives. These are the people who can pick the right idea and run with it. They tend to be very focused and committed to seeing a job through to the end. You get the biggest value from this kind of worker and a lot of our growth has come from their ability to see a project through to the end.
These are the workers with a great eye for detail, so look for people who double- and triple-check every document. Even if their attention to detail can add delays to a job, having these people in your team will set a good example to those around them.
In our business, we have a department that looks after product data and adding to products to our website. For this kind of job we need people that are going to be happy ploughing through larger amounts of little jobs in a day. While a lot of people would feel swamped in this situation, grafters are happy faced with an enormous list and don't get distracted as they tick jobs off.
This doesn't just mean hiring those who have written 'tech savvy' on their CV. This means finding people who enjoy sifting through data and are capable of efficiently analysing results in order to see what lessons can be learnt. Try to search for people who like completing puzzles and are comfortable working on their own.
For an online company like ours, the ability to collect and collate data is crucial to business growth. Software like Google Analytics is used at every aspect of our business, whether it is in purchasing or pricing. Data is only ever as valuable as the human interpreting it, so making sure you have the right person in the driving seat is crucial.
People who like people
As your workforce grows, it is important to hire people that will get on with those around them. This may sound obvious, but having a manager who is especially adept at dealing with people can make a big difference to the running of your business.
Their ability to build relationships quickly offers huge benefits. Certainly, as far as I'm concerned, there's no room for the old-school pitbull type of worker, who gets their way by inspiring fear in colleagues. Instead, you need staff who are innately able to foster loyalty and can motivate their teams through creating a supportive environment.
Externally, "people people" are of paramount importance when it comes to ensuring your company is seen in the right way. People who like people will ensure they present your business in the best possible light. These people excel in customer service. An unhappy customer can be more easily placated if they like the person dealing with them at the other end of the phone.
