The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has published its latest Economic Forecast, raising its expectations for UK GDP growth to 1.7 per cent for this year, and to 2.2 per cent for 2011.

The Environment Agency today called for entries for its inaugural Environmental Pioneer Awards.

The awards, which will be judged by a panel led by Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne MP, will recognise companies, government bodies, local authorities, charities and other organisations that lead the way on environmental performance.

Microsoft is working on a major project with Reading University designed to illustrate the energy savings that companies can make switching to its latest Windows 7 operating system.

According to the company, Windows 7 operates using about 30 per cent less energy that its previous operating system Windows XP.

The UK economy grew at its fastest pace for nine years in the second quarter, an unexpected revision to official data showed today.

The Office for National Statistics said strong construction activity had led it to revise its initial estimate of 1.1% GDP growth for the three months to June to 1.2%.

An independent analysis of 91,000 tenancies published today shows that small businesses are increasingly signing shorter deals, with 81 per cent on leases of five years or fewer and therefore unlikely to face a rent review. By comparison just over three per cent of small businesses have a lease of over ten years.

Volumes of sales on the high street were higher than a year ago in August, the second consecutive year-on-year increase, according to the latest CBI quarterly Distributive Trades Survey.

Retailers expect sales to continue growing in September and they are more optimistic about the general business situation in the coming three months.

The total number of Employment Tribunal claims has soared by over 56% in the last year, from 151,000 in 2008-2009 to a total of 236,100 up to the end of March this year.

The main increases are Working Time Directive claims, deduction of wages and redundancy pay claims.
