Range of green measures in pre-budget report

Chancellor Alistair Darling unveiled a range of green fiscal measures planned by the Government over the coming year.

Delivering his pre-budget report he said he wished to see the UK become a world leader on green issues.

In detail he announced that he would support £160m of public and private investment in low carbon projects and also double the commitment to investing in carbon capture and storage.

The role out of smart meters will be completed in 2020. Already 230,000 homes have benefited from the warm front scheme. An extra £200m will be available to promote energy efficiency in homes.

There will also be a boiler scrappage scheme which would be nationwide.

People with wind turbines at home who sell power to the national grid will be able to do so tax free.

Finally, drivers of electric cars will be exempt from road tax for five years.
