The number of personal bankruptcies in the North West has fallen over the last quarter, in line with the national trend. Analysis by KPMG of figures from the Ministry of Justice demonstrates an 11 per cent fall in people petitioning for their own bankruptcty, from 3,487 in the third quarter of 2007 to 3,119 in the fourth quarter. Nationally the quarter saw a fall of nine per cent in the number of people making themselves bankrupt in England and Wales and a 12 per cent fall in the number of individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs). The latter saw a 27 per cent decline over the course of 2007. In England and Wales 11,981 people bankrupted themselves and 9,376 agreed an IVA in the quarter October to December 2007. Paul Bateman, head of personal insolvency at KPMG in the North warned, however, that current economic indicators pointed to an increase in insolvencies over the coming months. |
