UK and US unemployment growth slows

The proportion of US employers making cuts to their workforces has more than halved in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the first quarter, with the UK predicted to follow suit. This is the finding of a comparison between labour market outlook surveys from the UK’s Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the US’s Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), published today as the latest US jobless figures are announced.
 
Record fall in higher rate taxpayers predicted

The number of higher rate taxpayers is forecast to plummet by a record 24% by 2010, a proportion a full five times greater than during the 1990/91 recession when the number of higher rate taxpayers fell by just 4.7%.

OECD inflation continues to slow

Consumer prices in the OECD area rose by 0.6 % in the year to April 2009, compared with 0.9 % in the year to March. Month-on-month, latest figures from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development reveal, prices rose by 0.2% in April after 0.3% in March 2009.
 
Interest rates are unchanged

The Bank of England today kept interest rates at 0.5 per cent for the third month in a row, signalling that it did not yet believe that inflationary pressure was building within the UK economy.
