FSB calls for independent retail regulator
Monday, 18 February 2008

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has attacked the remedies proposed by the Competition Commission in its inquiry into the grocery market.

It said the remit for the inquiry which issued its provisional recommendations on 15 February, was far too narrow and that consumers had been let down by the competition authorities.

The FSB called for an independent regulator with a wide-ranging retail brief to ensure fair competition in all parts of the sector and reverse the trend of over 2,000 independent shops going out of business each year.

Paul Henly, North West policy manager at the FSB, said, "The last thing the North West needs is more supermarkets. The Federation fears this report encourages larger retailers to expand unchecked."
