I operate from a couple of units on an industrial estate outside a small town and I often find kids hanging around the place after dark. In the mornings I find beer cans lying around and there’s been some minor vandalism but nothing more. Some staff have mentioned that they don’t feel safe and are afraid things might escalate.

What do you recommend I do? The police aren’t interested because currently it’s relatively minor stuff.

One of my salespeople has come back from a trip to the Far East with more than just the case of samples he took with him. Because it happened on a work trip he seems to think we should give him full pay for as long as it takes him to recover. I’m not so sure. What would you do?

I came back into the office last night to pick up some paperwork and spotted a CV and application letter from one of my middle management on the printer as I walked past. I’m pretty annoyed as only a month ago I gave this person a substantial pay rise despite it being against current company policy. What would you do?

I run a specialist logistics firm based not far from a residential area and, as the business has grown, we have found ourselves having to park some lorries on the road outside at certain times of day.

There have been complaints to the council about this and the council seems to be taking their side. I can’t really afford to move at the moment – despite the fact that we are expanding, because of fuel prices and other market factors we’re making the same profit as we did two years ago when turnover was lower. What can I do?

One of my biggest customers (about 10 per cent of last year’s business) has just undergone a pre-pack administration, leaving my courier firm out of pocket to the tune of five months’ invoices. Would refusing to work with them again just be cutting off my nose to spite my face? I’m really p*ssed off but I’m not sure I can afford to be proud.

Frank McKenna has never exactly been shy about being the public face of the Downtown in Business brand, which he founded in Liverpool in 2004 and now boasts operations in Preston and Manchester (the latter launched earlier this year). His weekly, “Thank Frank it’s Friday” email missives, “Frankie Says” blog and Tarantino-inspired advertisements are cases in point.
